Abstract

Conventional methods of fault location are not suitable for power system with series compensated transmission lines because of MOV protection with nonlinear characteristic. In this paper, an accurate fault location algorithm based on Fast ICA algorithm for series compensated transmission lines was presented. The fault travelling wave is separated from the complex signal wave by Fast ICA algorithm, and the separated signal wave is processed by energy ratio function for fault location for series compensated lines. The feasibility of Fast ICA algorithm applied to series compensated lines and the principle of selecting the width of the window for the energy ratio function are discussed. The noise can be separated from the mixed signal by Fast ICA algorithm, so the algorithm has a high anti-interference ability. ATP/EMTP simulation results show that the algorithm is accurate, fast and efficient.
